Sacraments & Ceremonies
On October 31, 1517, a 34 year old German Monk named Martin Luther, hung 95 theses to the door of Wittenberg Castle, calling into question some of the basic tenants of the Roman Catholic Faith. This act sparked a movement to look at making some changes and reforms, and so began the Protestant Reformation. One of the major components of this movement was to recognize the authority of Scripture over that of tradition. When Scripture was studied, the reformers realized that there are only two commandments that Jesus gives to us - two things that he outlines that we must do - the first is to share in the breaking of bread and the drinking of the fruit of the vine and the second is to baptize people. In keeping with this tradition, Southport Congregational church freely offers these two Sacraments to all who request it.
